Celebrity Hockey Players Join Golfers in Fight Against Cancer

Today Northwestern Ontario’s hockey celebrities left their usual gear behind in favour of golf shoes and clubs. 30 homegrown hockey stars participated in the Freedom 55 Financial Thunder Bay Hockey Celebrity Golf Classic in support of cancer care in our region. Funds raised support the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Circle of Angels Launched With $15,000 Donation

Today, the Northern Cancer Fund of the new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation introduced a new program in support of breast cancer in Northwestern Ontario. The Circle of Angels program funds the activities of the Linda Buchan Centre for Breast Screening & Assessment in Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.

Prostate Cancer Takes a Hit!
June 14, 2008
Participants in the 8th annual Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad helped raise $70,000 (net) in support of the fight against prostate cancer in Northwestern Ontario. The popular event included the “Roar for the Cure”, a parade of motorcycles, a poker run and a BBQ lunch at The Keg. 245 riders on 190 motorcycles participated today.

Hospitals Help Patients Kick the Habit
May 28, 2008
Hospitals throughout Northwestern Ontario are now better primed to help patients who want to butt out. Recent in-service training by researchers Dr. Pat Smith and Dr. Scott Sellick will assist nurses to implement bedside smoking cessation programs for patients. Dr. Smith trained approximately 120 nurses and other healthcare providers in 6 days of regional travel covering 3,000 kilometers.

Foundation Grant Enables Minimally Invasive Diagnoses for Breast Cancer Patients
April 25, 2008
Thunder Bay – The new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation announces yet another grant for equipment that uses a less-invasive method to detect cancer. A Northern Cancer Fund grant for $46,766 will purchase a Neo2000 Gamma Detection Device, a state-of-the art system surgeons can use when performing sentinel node biopsies on breast cancer patients.

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Launches “Live and Learn”

A new video, launched today at a media conference, aims to increase awareness of mental health services at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). “Live and Learn” is a 10 minute long overview of the TBRHSC’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit, which provides assessment and treatment of mental health disorders for Northwestern Ontario youth.

$300,000 from Northern Cancer Fund for Colonoscopy Equipment in Northwestern Ontario

Thunder Bay – The new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation announced its first major grant today to kick off Cancer Awareness Month. The Health Sciences Foundation’s Northern Cancer Fund granted $300,000 for colonoscopy equipment to help increase access to colorectal cancer screening across Northwestern Ontario.

Earlier today, the new Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation unveiled a brand new look to signify the integration of the Northern Cancer Research Foundation and the former Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. The new Health Sciences Foundation takes the best from both organizations and broadens its focus to all aspects of healthcare in Northwestern Ontario. The two foundations officially begin to operate as a single organization on April 1, 2008 with a mission to raise funds to support excellence in healthcare for the people of Northwestern Ontario.

Foundations combine efforts to increase value to Donors and impact on healthcare

Northwestern Ontario’s leading fundraising organizations will become one. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation (TBRHSF) and the Northern Cancer Research Foundation (NCRF) confirmed today that they will integrate. The decision, made recently by the Board of Directors of each Foundation, was reached following extensive research and community input.
