Dads fight prostate cancer

The love of the ride and the fight against a deadly enemy – these are two things that unite over 300 motorcycle enthusiasts years after year.  The BELL Motorcycle Ride for Dad has become a Thunder Bay favourite, raising $485,000 in the past eight years.  Funds support the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.  Every dollar raised stays in Northwestern Ontario to fund prostate cancer research, education, diagnosis and treatment.

The fight against prostate cancer in Northwestern Ontario will continue on Saturday, June 20, 2009 with the 9th annual BELL Motorcycle Ride for Dad.  Over 300 motorcycles will “Roar for the Cure” as the event kicks off at 9:30 am at the Keg Restaurant on the day before Father’s Day.  Participants then enjoy a parade down Memorial Avenue, a scenic Poker Run in and around the city and a silent auction.

There are many impressive prize incentives to register early and raise high pledges.  To register for the BELL Motorcycle Ride for Dad, visit www.healthsciencesfoundation.ca or call 345-HOPE.

“Prostate cancer is responsible for more than 25% of all cancers in men in Northwestern Ontario,” says Glenn Craig, President & CEO of the Health Sciences Foundation.  “That’s why the BELL Motorcycle Ride for Dad is so important – it’s making a difference.  Today, 90% of men are still alive five years after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.”

Sponsors and participants of the BELL Motorcycle Ride for Dad are helping save lives, not only by helping to raise funds, but also by encouraging men to talk to their healthcare providers about prostate health.

Awareness is key to avoiding prostate cancer and catching it as early as possible. Caught early, the disease is treatable. “Let’s face it,” says Tere McDonald, Chair of the event. “No one looks forward to a prostate exam, but when we understand that it can save our lives, we ‘Take it Like a Man’ and get it done.”

The Northern Cancer Fund of the Health Sciences Foundation raises funds that are 100% dedicated to support excellence in cancer care in Northwestern Ontario.
