Home away from home celebrates fourth anniversary
Each year, over 1,500 Northwestern Ontario residents are treated for cancer at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Regional Cancer Care. 33% of those patients live in regional communities.
To many of the regional patients, a home away from home makes all the difference when facing an overwhelming battle against cancer. Thanks to donations to the former Northern Cancer Research Foundation and now the Northern Cancer Fund, that sanctuary is celebrating its fourth anniversary.
The TBayTel Tamarack House is the place where any resident from the region who needs to come to Thunder Bay for cancer treatment can stay for free, for as long as needed. In the past year, there were over 5,800 stays at the TBayTel Tamarack House.
“This is one fantastic place, and a great cause to support,” says Trudy Tait of Kenora, who is staying at TBayTel Tamarack House with her husband Bob while he receives cancer treatment. He requires radiation therapy five days per week for five weeks. They will stay at the House for the duration, reducing the financial burden associated with travel for cancer care. “We give back by making a donation because we know how important this place is when you’re away from home and undergoing cancer treatment,” Trudy adds.
Manitouwadge residents Dorothy Bryan and her husband Mark have stayed at the House several times since August. This visit will last three weeks while Mark receives treatment. Dorothy feels that staying at the TBayTel Tamarack House helps them to cope with Mark’s cancer. “When you can share experiences with other patients and compare notes, you learn a lot. And you create bonds that give you strength,” she explains.
Located just meters away from the Health Sciences Centre, TBayTel Tamarack House offers 20 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and double beds. A large kitchen and comfortable lounges create a supportive environment where lasting friendships begin.
Donations to the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation help to furnish and equip TBayTel Tamarack House.
