Event raises over half a million to fight prostate cancer
Thunder Bay’s most popular motorcycle event isn’t just about having a great time, it’s about making a difference. The 9th annual Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad brought in $70,000, bringing the nine-year total to over $555,000.
Event Chair Tere McDonald is thrilled to reach this milestone. “The Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad has become an important influence in our community,” McDonald says. “In addition to making “prostate cancer” a household phrase, we’ve raised a significant amount of money to help treat the disease.”
The event supports the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. 100% of the funds remain in Northwestern Ontario to advance the fight against prostate cancer through education and awareness, research and patient care.
“Prostate cancer in Northwestern Ontario is on the rise,” says Glenn Craig, President & CEO of the Health Sciences Foundation. “But through the remarkable efforts of Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad volunteers, sponsors and participants, we can beat prostate cancer.”
The popular event included the “Roar for the Cure”, a parade of motorcycles, a poker run and a BBQ lunch at The Keg. 308 riders on 250 motorcycles participated today.
John Trevisanutto earned the title of top pledge earner, collecting $10,600 in pledges. To date John has raised $64,200.00 in pledges for the Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad.
Traditionally, local Motorcycle groups the Hogs and the Retreads compete to raise the highest amount of pledges. This year, they were joined by newcomer group Team Code 3, representing motorcyclists of all ages and styles of bike. This year, the HOGS were the challenge winners, raising $15,240.01. All three groups are to be congratulated for their outstanding efforts and ongoing support of the Bell Motorcycle Ride for Dad.
As part of the event, participants enjoy the sights in and around Thunder Bay as part of the poker run. Doug Hari returned with the top hand and was awarded first prize.
Together, we are making Hope possible.
