A Hospital parking lot was transformed last Sunday when members of the Thunder Bay Autosport Club (TBAC) raced the clock in the 5th annual AutoX Fundraiser for the Northern Cancer Fund.

“Five years ago our club decided to focus our fundraising efforts on fighting cancer, because in recent years our members have lost family and friends to this terrible disease.” says Gary Adomko, TBAC’s President. That’s when they approached the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation with an idea to fundraise for local cancer care.

Everyone is welcome to come out and watch the next TBAC AutoX Fundraiser on September 30th starting at 11am, in the Hospital’s parking lot I (behind 1040 Oliver Road). Bring the kids!

TBAC members were asked to collect pledges to participate, and together raised an astounding $11,982.87 – exceeding last year’s total by more than $1,000. In all they’ve raised $41,850 for the Northern Cancer Fund since 2014, funding exceptional cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research right here in Northwestern Ontario.

“It’s an exciting event to watch!” exclaims Elaine Graydon, Manager of Special Events at the Health Sciences Foundation, “This event is only possible with the continued support of their sponsors, Halfway Motors, Mahon Electric, GFL Environmental and many others. The organizers dedicate many hours to deliver a great event and the amount of money they’re raising is incredible. The number of participants has been increasing every year and in past years some of our staff members have even gone for a spin!”

To compliment their fundraising efforts this year, they added something new: Online fundraising.

“The online pages make fundraising s a little more accessible,“ explains Graydon, “Participants are able to reach family and friends across the country, or even the world, which isn’t feasible with paper pledge sheets. People really seem to like it.”

Adomko adds, “Our membership is proud to have raised over $40,000 to date, and we hope to continue to help support the fight to end cancer through our continued partnership with the TBRHSF foundation.”

In fact, they’re going beyond cancer! The TBAC are adding a new AutoX Fundraiser next month, this time for the Northern Cardiac Fund. Everyone is welcome to come out and watch on September 30th starting at 11 a.m. It’s sure to be a thrilling afternoon for kids and car enthusiasts alike.
