Meet Dr. Sarita Verma, Director, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Board of Directors

Dr. Sarita Verma joined the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Board of Directors in June 2019. As the President and CEO of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), she shares her vast knowledge and expertise in order to advance the strategic goals of both the Hospital and the medical school.

“As Dean, it is my privilege to represent the medical school on the Hospital’s board of directors,” said Dr. Verma. “The Hospital and NOSM are closely linked and share a commitment to meeting the health needs of Northwestern Ontario and a common vision of collaboration, partnership and social accountability with an academic mandate. My position on the board ensures that NOSM remains committed to continuously improving upon, shaping and supporting the Hospital’s vision and goals.”

Dr. Verma holds a law degree from the University of Ottawa and a medical degree from McMaster University.  She is the former Deputy Dean and Postgraduate Dean from University of Toronto and Queen’s University, former Vice President of Education at the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) and a Professor Emerita in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.

“I am a proud Canadian and the third child of an immigrant, a single mother from Delhi, India. My mother raised our family to be good citizens, to serve our community and to have strong values, namely: honesty, kindness and transparency,” said Dr. Verma. “Those values along with my professional experiences thus far will guide my actions as a board member.”

Dr. Verma’s goal is for both organizations to strengthen their working relationship and consolidate efforts in order to effectively improve patient, family and community care. “Together, both organizations play a crucial role in the training and education of future and current health care professionals across the region,” she said. “The Hospital, NOSM, and our valued partners will continue to work together and push the boundaries in order to find innovative solutions for patients and families in Northwestern Ontario.”

Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre’s Board of Directors is comprised of dedicated volunteers from the community, committed to ensuring our hospital provides safe, quality Patient and Family Centred Care. To learn more, please visit www.tbrhsc.net.
