Areas of Need

Our goal was to help Regional Cancer Care become the best centre in the province for Exceptional Cancer Care. To do so, we identified three areas of need - Diagnoses, Treatment and Research.

Thanks to your generous support, Exceptional Cancer Care is a reality!

We now have:

An Integrated Cancer Screening Coach:

  • Launched in Spring 2013

  • Screens 6,200 women per year for breast cancer across Northwestern Ontario

  • Completed 864 PAP tests (for cervical cancer) & 1,178 Fecal Occult Blood Tests (for colorectal cancer) since launch

Two state-of-the-art Linear Accelerators for Radiation Therapy:

  • Both units were online as of Fall 2013; treated 750 patients

  • Capability for Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy to form radiation beam closely to tumour; gives higher radiation doses with greater precision, sparing healthy tissue

Brand New Chemotherapy Chairs and Equipment at 14 Sites Across Northwestern Ontario:

  • IV pumps, chemotherapy chairs (including bariatric chairs), vital sign monitors, biological safety cabinet, fridges, patient-controlled analgesic pump, stretcher; all ensure patients can stay in their home community, close to family and friends, and have exceptional cancer care

Surgical Oncology Equipment:

  • New endoscopes and endoscopic ultrasound for enhanced cancer screening and treatment

An Incredible Cyclotron:

  • Arrived in Feb 2015; isotope production to begin soon

  • 1 of 3 high-energy cyclotrons across Canada, and the highest energy cyclotron in Ontario; specifically designed for research

  • Isotopes will be used for current PET imaging and the development of new imaging agents to better find and treat cancer

Our First MicroPET scanner:

  • Arrived Spring 2014

  • Used to test new imaging isotopes from cyclotron in rodents

  • Critical step prior to human clinical trials for new cancer therapies & commercialization process
