Effective Patient Family Advisors...

- Believe that your health experiences or your family members’ will make a difference for others

- Have good listening and communication skills

- Has an open mind and positive approach

- Want to find solutions

One Patient Family Advisor recently described the role:

“I have been a patient a family advisor for seven years at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. I am a very pro-active patient and a strong advocate for my family.

“Patient and Family centered care is a corner stone in how our hospital operates. We are advanced far ahead of many other hospitals in Canada in this very important area and we are better because of it. I have been on many committees over the years in different departments so I have an inside view into the operational aspect and what goes on in the back ground that most patients do not see. Having that voice of a patient or family/support member at the table brings a different prospective.

“I have gone through three different cancer experiences since 2008. I can bring an unique patient view point, suggestions, concerns and a physical presence of why you are all here working in the multiple occupations that it takes to get a cancer patient taken care of.

“This process is a TEAM effort so working together is a must and so important for the patient. Whether it is the doctors, nurses, lab and DI services, pharmacy, tech support, management, clerical, support services, and even the cleaning staff etc. all play a role.”

We are currently recruiting Patient Family Advsiors to work with the following areas: Paediatrics, Women and Children's Program, and Indigenous Health
