Finding out you have cancer is a terrifying situation. Trust me, I’ve been there. Terrifying is putting it mildly.

However, finding out you have cancer during a worldwide pandemic is even scarier.

Can you imagine having to travel far away for cancer care during this uncertain time? The thought of that seems implausible. Not only because of the stress of travel, but losing your support system? Unthinkable.

However, when faced with cancer, the need for care right away isn’t a choice; it’s a necessity.

It’s why, now, more than ever, our Cancer Centre and the patients who are treated here, need your help.

Cancer doesn't stop in the face of a pandemic and neither will we. Our healthcare professionals are some of the most caring people you will ever meet (truly they are) and they continue to provide exceptional cancer care, giving HOPE in this bleak time.

You can provide HOPE too.

When you make a donation to the Northern Cancer Fund, you’re giving women like me a better chance of surviving breast cancer thanks to the latest equipment to find breast cancer.

Detailed images are everything when it comes to looking for breast cancer; you can’t treat what you can’t see. With your help, a new Mammography Unit in the Linda Buchan Centre will continue to give women access to Rapid Breast Assessment; where mammography, ultrasound, biopsy (if required) and a one-on-one interaction with a breast imaging radiologist is offered all in one visit.

You’ll shorten the time it takes for women with a suspicion of breast cancer to receive a diagnosis or be given the ‘all-clear’. Finding cancer earlier is essential in providing HOPE for the most successful treatment.

When you make a donation to the Northern Cancer Fund, you’re giving men a better chance of surviving prostate cancer with fewer side effects thanks to the latest equipment to treat prostate cancer.

High Dose Rate Brachytherapy is one of the latest forms of radiation therapy used to treat prostate cancer. It uses small needles inserted into the prostate that are wired to a radiation source. A high radiation dose is then delivered precisely to the tumour, sparing healthy cells. With your help, an Ultrasound will ensure the Radiation Oncologist can correctly place the needles into the prostate for the highest chance of success.

For the one in nine men who will have prostate cancer, you’ll give HOPE for effective treatment with fewer side effects from radiation.

I know you've always highly valued exceptional cancer care close-to-home. Today's reality cements this value more than ever.

Please – give cancer patients HOPE – today, during this pandemic, and everyday thereafter.

I invite you to make your donation in honour of someone you know who’s facing cancer right now, or in memory of a loved one who’s passed away.

Thank you for your continued generosity and kindness in this uncertain time. Together, we will conquer COVID-19, and one day, hopefully, cancer.

Sincerely,

jody-nesti
