Things That Get Your Heart Racing for $1,000 Please, Alex!

Message from Dr. Stephen Adams
Chair, Board of Directors, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation

We're underway!

Construction of the new Cardiovascular Surgery Program (CVS) began earlier this month as the first crews came in to dismantle the impressive structure covering the Renal Services Department entranceway. We are literally changing the face of healthcare at the Hospital: this is the very first major exterior change to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre since it first opened 21 years ago.

Getting in and out of the Hospital has changed slightly, but it looks a lot worse than it really is. Security created a nice little loop for drop-off and pick-up of patients by the Medical Centre. I know it will take a little patience. But the way I look at it, me taking a few extra minutes today will save someone a few extra weeks in Toronto because they can have their surgery here instead.

Besides, the long-term gain is enormous. Our donors worked hard to bring more cardiovascular services including cardiac surgery home to Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. Soon, the vast majority of patients who need bypass surgery and related surgeries will be able to get them right here. Travelling to downtown Toronto is easier for some, that's for sure. Either way booking airfares and hotels does add to the challenges of accessing healthcare, especially in emergencies.

Regardless of your comfort level travelling to Toronto, we can all agree that it's much better to have that surgery here instead where friends and families are close for support. This month, we took a huge step forward in that direction.
