Smoking is a health and safety hazard, both to the tobacco user and non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, and in order for us to provide the best treatment to our patients we need to support them to quit smoking. Additionally, our smoke-free grounds also help to protect patients, families, staff and visitors who don’t smoke from the negative impact and harms of inhaling second-hand smoke.
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act includes hospital properties as 100% smoke-free properties. 100% smoke-free means that there are no designated smoking areas on hospital campuses. The Act prohibits the use of cigarettes and tobacco products both within the hospitals buildings and anywhere on the hospital property.
Tobacco-free properties are the standard for Ontario hospitals. They are an important part of helping to keep all individuals healthy and in an environment that supports and promotes smoking cessation.
