A Giving Tuesday ‘Thank You'

Giving Tuesday is one of my favourite days of the year.
If you haven't heard of Giving Tuesday, let me fill you in: It's an international day of generosity held every year on the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Donors from across the world take part by supporting the causes that are close to their hearts. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation has been celebrating Giving Tuesday with our donors for 10 years.
It's been my pleasure to plan the Foundation's annual Giving Tuesday for the past decade, along with help from my awesome coworkers. Each year we set a goal – a dollar amount that will fund a specific piece of vital equipment at the Hospital – and each year our incredible community of donors meets or exceeds that goal!
This year's Giving Tuesday was no different. The fundraising started at exactly midnight on December 2nd with a goal to raise $30,567 to fund a new isolette for babies in the Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. By 1 p.m. our donors had reached that goal, with help from a matching gift from a generous local family! We then set a stretch goal to raise $25,473 more to fund a birthing bed for women in the Emergency Department – and the community reached that goal at 7 p.m.!
In total $73,512.65 was donated in just 24 hours!
It would be an understatement to say I was blown away by the generosity of our donors on Giving Tuesday. When I have a stretch goal in mind it's always a distant “what-if” or “just in case” scenario… and this year's support funded not just one but two pieces of critical equipment for local healthcare.
This year we hit a mind-blowing milestone, too! Over the past 10 years of Giving Tuesdays, our community has donated over $500,000 – which has funded an incredible 29 pieces of vital medical equipment for the Hospital. Equipment like: 3 vital signs monitors, 2 bili blankets, a defibrillator, a fetal telemetry monitor, 3 open heart instrument trays, 9 pacemaker generators, 2 panda infant warmers, a delivery cart, 3 infant cribs, a giraffe infant warmer, a defibrillator & ventilator for a paediatric transfer deck, and now an isolette and birthing bed!
All this to say: Thank you to all of our donors. Thank you for seeing the importance of local healthcare, and being a part of making it even better. Thank you to the brand new donors who joined us for the first time, and for the ones who show your support time after time. Thank you for 10 years of amazing, whirlwind Giving Tuesdays. See you for the next 10!
