Mike and Dawn Wrenshall recently made a $10,000 donation to support Dr. Hazem Elmansy – a Urologist who, in Mike’s words was, "amazing". The couple wanted to show their immense gratitude to Dr. Elmansy for the care he provided to Mike while being treated for bladder cancer and to support Dr. Elmansy’s ongoing urological research.

To show your gratitude for a member of your health care team, consider making a donation in their honour. Visit healthsciencesfoundation.ca/grateful or call 345-4673.

“When you find out you have cancer, your world shifts – majorly,” recalls Mike Wrenshall, a bladder cancer survivor. “All of a sudden you become very vulnerable. You’re not in control anymore. And you feel violated that something like that would be in your body.”

Wrenshall vividly remembers his diagnosis and subsequent treatment. “I was lucky,” he says. “I had surgery in less than a week after being told I had cancer. It was such a relief to get it out of me and know I didn’t have to go to sleep with cancer in my body.”

Performing the surgery was Urologist, Dr. Hazem Elmansy – a physician, who in Wrenshall’s words was, “amazing”.  “I went through an awful time in my life and Dr. Elmansy was so comforting and always available to guide me through the process. I’m extremely thankful for the care he provided to me. He really went above and beyond to ensure that I felt confident and well looked-after.”

“Dr. Elmansy is a gem and, as a way to say thank you, I wanted to help him,” says Wrenshall. “We’re extremely lucky to have him here in Thunder Bay. I don’t actually think our community recognizes just how talented and caring he is. I thought that if there was anything I could do to recognize his work and allow him to continue to offer incredible care, then I’d do it.”

Reflecting on his journey and the care he was given, Wrenshall decided, along with his wife Dawn, to make a donation of $10,000 as a way to say thank you to Dr. Elmansy and to support ongoing urological research. “It’s our way to show support for the work he’s doing now and the work we hope he will continue to do in the future,” says Wrenshall. “For the men in our community, having a Urologist such as Dr. Elmansy who can perform procedures that almost no one else in the world is doing is, quite simply, astounding. I’ll do anything I can to make sure he can stay here!”

Wrenshall concludes, “Beyond his technical expertise, what I like most about Dr. Elmansy is his genuine caring attitude. He is sincere, authentic and has a great sense of humour. I am proud to donate in honour of him and continue to improve care for men in our community.”
