Thunder Bay — May 30, Valhalla Inn
A brand-new fundraiser is bringing Thunder Bay's community spirit into the spotlight. Chase the Case, presented by Doane Grant Thornton, is set to make its debut on May 30 at the Valhalla Inn, and it's already proving to be a powerful force for good.
The event supports the Northern Cancer Fund for breast cancer, with a key promise at its heart: every dollar raised stays local, adding to the already incredible services at our local cancer care centre, right here at home. And thanks to overwhelming support from local businesses, over $31,800 in prizes will be up for grabs — an incredible testament to the generosity that defines this community.
“This event couldn't happen without the business community,” said Haley Werbowetski, Events Manager at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. “They've gone above and beyond — not just with donations, but by standing behind a cause that touches so many lives in Thunder Bay.”
More than just a fun evening of mystery and prizes, Chase the Case is a chance for the community to come together and make a lasting impact. From boutique shops to major sponsors, businesses have offered their support in ways that go far beyond numbers. By attaching their names to events like this, they are offering hope to patients and families throughout the region.
“Some contributions can't be measured with data or figures,” Haley added. “When a business shows up for cancer care, they're telling every patient, survivor, and caregiver in our city: we're with you.”
The night will also feature an inspiring keynote address by Leona Fleming, a local woman living with breast cancer. While she will share some of her journey at the event, her presence alone speaks volumes about why events like this matter.
“Leona's story is one of strength and determination,” Haley shared. “She brings heart and humour to a difficult topic — and she reminds us what's truly at stake.”
Guests will have the chance to bid on cases throughout the evening, each packed with high-value prizes donated by local sponsors. But beyond the excitement, the goal is clear: to ensure that patients can continue receiving top-tier breast cancer care without having to leave Northwestern Ontario.
Proceeds from Chase the Case will help enhance diagnostics, treatments, and supportive care services at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre — because fighting cancer close to home makes all the difference.
As excitement builds for this inaugural event, the message is clear: Thunder Bay is a city that shows up. It shows up for patients, for families, and for hope. And on May 30, it will show up once again — briefcases and all.
