Students Participate in Hospital's Indigenous Career Experience Program

Indigenous students had an opportunity to learn about the many different health care career and volunteering options available at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. The Indigenous Career Experience (ICE) Program, held on Wednesday, April 3, included tours, presentations and hands-on activities in a number of departments including Emergency, Mental Health, Operating Room, a Nursing Simulation, and the Medical Device Reprocessing Department.
The ICE program serves as a great way to introduce Indigenous youth to a variety of career possibilities that exist within health care. The goal is to provide Indigenous students with a good understanding of how our Hospital works, and to encourage them to pursue career opportunities with us.
This year’s event welcomed high school students from the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, Lakehead Public Schools, Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School and Matawa Learning Centre.
Another aim of the ICE program is to encourage Indigenous students to get involved as volunteers at the Hospital. In addition to helping students earn their mandatory volunteer hours, volunteering can provide a lot of valuable career experiences for students and lead to new friendships.
