Pink Caps for Cancer Ready to Paint the Town Pink!

(Thunder Bay, ON) – Last year’s Pink Caps for Cancer was such a success, the team at Downtown Volkswagen didn’t hesitate for a second before deciding to host the popular pink fundraiser again this year.

Starting today, Pink Caps for Cancer will once more raise money for the Northern Cancer Fund – specifically for breast cancer – by encouraging people to purchase and display pink caps on their tires. Funds raised will be used to support exceptional diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer in Northwestern Ontario. Pink caps will be available for sale from October 1 to October 31 at both Downtown Volkswagen and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation. A set of 4 pink caps is available for a minimum $5 donation to the Northern Cancer Fund.

Downtown Volkswagen General Manager, Devan Mascarin said, “We were truly amazed at our community’s support of this initiative last year. The stories that were shared with us when people dropped by to get their pink caps were so inspirational and we were humbled to be able to give back to the Northern Cancer Fund in the amount of $12,326 to continue to support patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Knowing that these funds stay in our community was important to us, but was even more meaningful for all those who supported this fundraiser. We hope that we can continue the momentum that began last year and bring even more hope to breast cancer patients with Pink Caps for Cancer.”

Added Mascarin, “The caps really do fit almost any tire. Last year we had someone bring in a unicycle and even a wheelbarrow. Lots of people used them on their bikes too, in addition to their cars and trucks. Even more astonishing to me was that some businesses came in and purchased them for all their employees; that was incredible to see. We look forward to working with businesses again this year to spread this fundraising initiative across our community.”

Andrea Docherty, the Program Director, Regional Cancer Care at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre said, “Seeing all the pink caps around town last year was fun and really brought to light the need to raise funds for our cancer centre so that we can provide diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer for patients here at home. This year we hope to replace the specialized breast imaging workstations. These workstations are used to read mammography images to detect and diagnose breast cancer. New workstations will mean better image quality for the Radiologists using these tools.
