Burger Barn Serves Up Burgers for Boobies This October

Every Boobie Burger sold in October helps support breast cancer care in Northwestern Ontario through the Northern Cancer Fund.

This October, for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Burger Barn is flipping burgers with a purpose. A Thunder Bay favourite since 2002, Burger Barn is launching Burgers for Boobies in support of breast cancer care through the Northern Cancer Fund. From October 1 to 31, 50% of proceeds from every Boobie Burger sold will be donated to help patients and families affected by breast cancer in Northwestern Ontario.

The idea behind the special burger came from John Hockenhull, brother of co-owner Tony Hockenhull. The centerpiece of the fundraiser, the Boobie Burger, is as fun as it is flavourful. Served on an authentic “boobie bun” shaped like a breast, this deluxe creation is stacked high with lettuce, tomato, bacon, BBQ mayo, and bacon Persian butter. Guests can choose between a classic hamburger or Spicy Mother Clucker Chicken — either way, the incredible mix of savoury, smokey, and sweet flavours will leave you coming back for more.

Burger Barn is challenging the Thunder Bay community — businesses and residents to come try a Boobie Burger and in doing so, help make life a little better for someone living with breast cancer.

“We are always honoured to take part in community events, especially for such a noble cause,” said Tony Hockenhull, co-founder of Burger Barn. “For us, it's about giving back and we are excited and thankful to partner with the Foundation on this fundraiser.”

The fundraiser is also personal for the Hockenhull family, with their mother Lorraine having worked for many years at the Cancer Centre in radiation therapy, booking appointments for patients.

“Community partners like Burger Barn show us the power of food, fun, and generosity coming together for impact,” said Jenelle Dawson, Hospital Foundation Development Assistant, Events. “I got to try both versions of the Boobie Burger during a taste test, and honestly, they were both amazing — the flavours are so good! It makes it even more exciting knowing every bite helps support breast cancer care.”

The Burgers for Boobies fundraiser runs from October 1–31, 2025 at Burger Barn, 1085 Memorial Avenue in Thunder Bay. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., guests can enjoy the special Boobie Burger — available in juicy beef or Spicy Mother Clucker Chicken for just $12, or make it a combo for $3 more.

Owned and operated by brothers Tony and John Hockenhull, along with co-founder Roger Drcar, Burger Barn has built its reputation on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, with everything made in-house from hand-smashed patties to scratch-made buns and fresh-cut fries. Just as important as great food is their support of community, and Burgers for Boobies is their latest way of giving back to support care closer to home.
