Hospital physician awarded College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Council Award

Dr. Nicole Laferriere, Chief of Oncology and Medical Director at Regional Cancer Care Northwest, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, was awarded the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) 2020 Council award. The award honours outstanding Ontario physicians with a broad range of diverse roles and abilities.

Every year, physicians from across Ontario are nominated for the CPSO award by colleagues, patients and local community leaders. Dr. Laferriere is one of only four 2020 award recipients. The criteria for selecting award recipients are based on the eight physician roles identified by Educating Future Physicians in Ontario; roles that reflect the needs and expectations of patients and families. Through this award, CPSO honours outstanding Ontario physicians who demonstrated excellence and come closest to meeting society’s vision of an “ideal physician”.

Dr. Laferriere has been a full time Hematologist at our Hospital since 2005 and has been the Chief of Oncology and Medical Director for Regional Cancer Care Northwest since 2014.  Along with her dedication to patient care, she also holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.

“Dr. Laferriere is an outstanding physician and an asset to our Hospital and Regional Cancer Centre,” said Dr. Zaki Ahmed, Chief of Staff, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. “Cancer patients are some of the most vulnerable patients in our region and it is comforting to know that they are under the care of such a talented, compassionate, and accomplished physician. This award is very well deserved.”

In addition to the CPSO Council award, Dr. Laferriere has also received a number of other awards and scholarships, including a gold medal award at Lakehead University, National Sciences & Engineering Research Scholarships at the University of Ottawa, and the 2009 Cancer Care Ontario Human Touch Award.
