$2,037,800 allocated towards replacement of a Cardiac Cath (Catherization) Lab in 2022.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation is very excited to announce that it has approved over $5.6 million of funding for equipment for the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. This funding was made possible by donors to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation.

Of the total $5.6 million in grants, nearly $2 million of that will fund the replacement of a Cardiac Cath (Catherization) Lab which consists of a C-arm, patient table, and control station. One of the labs is now past end of life and needs replacing. This replacement will also be an upgrade offering the latest technology including integrated systems for more streamlined procedures.

"The funding from the Foundation allows us to help improve access to regional care services for patients across Northwestern Ontario. Our hospitals collaborate to provide better care to our patients. This is another example of working together to provide the best care possible for the people of Northwestern Ontario," says Dr. Rhonda Crocker Ellacott, President & CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and CEO of Thunder Bay Regional Health Research Institute.

Bob Beat the Odds.

Northwestern Ontario has the highest rate of heart disease in Canada. In fact, almost one out of every two deaths in the region is directly related to heart disease.

We want to change that – and with your help we will.

Together, we will bring Cardiovascular Surgery to Northwestern Ontario, so that people like Bob can get the care they need.

Thanks to your donations, Bob received the care he needed quickly, ultimately saving his life.

“I Received World Class Cardiac Care in Thunder Bay” – Paul Carr's Story

“It was during one of my rides, that I initially noticed some pain my chest while going up a hill. Thinking it was just indigestion, I took a small break, and continued to finish my ride,” he said. “A few days later, I went back to do the exact same 50 km ride, and again, I got that same feeling at the exact same spot, but still thinking it wasn’t anything concerning, I finished the ride.”

Paul got checked right away and bloodwork determined he had had a heart attack. “I can clearly remember thinking ‘I’ve got lots of life left to live and I still have kids in school’,” he said.

The Thunder Bay 50/50 funds critical cardiac services here at our hospital, so people like Paul can get the healthcare they need close to home.
